The Vegetarian Society - Vegan Approved

Run by The Vegetarian Society (a UK charity of 175+ years), the “Vegan Approved” mark means a product has been independently checked against the Society’s vegan criteria — not just self-labelled — a trustworthy signal for shoppers at the point of purchase.

What the mark guarantees

  • Contains no animal-derived ingredients
  • Measures to avoid cross-contamination in production
  • GMO-free
  • No animal testing carried out or commissioned

Where you’ll find it

It spans food, drink, cosmetics, household products, fashion, ingredients and pet food. The Society is the UK’s leading vegan certifier, with trademarks probably registered in more countries than any other.

Important: not a sustainability label

This mark covers vegan dietary suitability only. It is not an environmental, social or sustainability label and is never used for such claims (under EU Directive 2005/29/EC it is not a “sustainability label”). It says nothing about a product’s carbon footprint or sourcing.

Bottom line: this certification means a product meets an independently verified vegan standard. Read it as an ethical / dietary trademark, not a green credential.
